Q. Can I put Tatouage on textured walls/surfaces?
A. Absolutely! It works just as well as it does on smooth surfaces. You just need to take your time to get it into all of the nooks and crannies. My own home has extremely textured walls and it worked beautifully. You may get a few hairline cracks here and there, but that just adds to the natural, hand-painted look.
Q. Can I reuse my Tatouage?
A. Because Tatouage is a fine quality, high-resolution reproduction of my artwork, it is meant to permanently adhere to the surface for a 'hand-painted' look. It is not a stencil and cannot be reused.
Q. Can I clean my Tatouage?
A. Yes. I recommend that you lightly wipe the artwork using a damp sponge, if need be. Do not soak it if the design is not sealed. Treat your Tatouage as if it really were hand-painted. Do not scrub it, or use harsh chemical detergents.
Q. How long will my Tatouage last?
A. Your Tatouage should last indefinitely if applied according to the directions. Remember that sealing it will prolong its durability.
Q. When do I need to seal my Tatouage?
A. You should seal your Tatouage with several coats of clear acrylic spray when it is applied to semi-gloss/high-gloss surfaces, furniture, floors, floor canvases, high moisture areas or any generally high traffic area. You do not need to seal it when applied to walls that are painted with low-sheen, or matte paint.
Q. Are there any surfaces that Tatouage is not intended for?
A. The main thing to keep in mind is that Tatouage is not waterproof. It should not be applied to sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, etc. It can be used on walls and tiles in bathrooms, but should be sealed to protect it from high humidity.
Q. What is the best surface/paint to apply Tatouage to?
A. Tatouage will not stick to high gloss paint. Tatouage is best when used on flat or satin paint. If you have semi-gloss or high-gloss paint on the surface you are applying to, try using the water/vinegar mix, or use light grain sandpaper (make sure to wipe down your wall to remove the residue left from the sandpaper).
Q. Can I put my Tatouage on mirrors and/or glass?
A. Yes, but because you cannot put a sealer on mirrors and glass, your Tatouage may not last forever. Be careful not to scrape the artwork and it should last for quite some time. I put it on a mirror in the bathroom 2 years ago and it still looks great!! No wear at all!
Q. Can I put my Tatouage outdoors?
A. You can put your Tatouage outdoors, but you should definitely put a good amount of outdoor polyurethane on it to protect it from the elements. Also, remember to clean the surface thoroughly before you apply the artwork. It should not be installed where it will receive constant direct sunlight.
Q. Can I put Tatouage on top of my Tatouage?
A. Absolutely! I designed all of the artwork to be used either separately, or together. I love to add flowers on top of the leaves, intertwine the vines with the wrought iron scroll, or create any combination of looks. Layering the designs only adds to the look of realism. Use your imagination and create your own one-of-a-kind mural!
Q. How do I remove my Tatouage?
A. Again, treat your Tatouage as if it really were hand-painted. If you are changing your décor, simply paint over it. If you would rather remove it entirely, then buy a roll of wide clear tape (often sold in the Post Office) and apply it over the Tatouage. After rubbing the tape over the design, peel off slowly. A majority of your Tatouage should come off the wall on the first try. Continue this process until all Tatouage has been removed. If it is on a mirror or glass, you can scrape it off, use nail polish remover, or tape.
Reverse Tatting!
We have discovered a great way to remove tatouage from your surfaces before painting! Using a piece of postal tape (the clear kind used for mailing packages), lay the tape over the design and 'tat' it to the design using your tat stick. Then gently remove the tape and the design should come off with it. We have found that this technique better restores the wall to its original surface for repainting. Painting over the design without using the tape sometimes leaves the wall with flat spaces that don't match the texture in the rest of the wall. Once you have removed the entire design, it is ready for painting.
Q. What if I have trouble applying my Tatouage?
A. Tatouage application really is a very simple process. If you find you are having trouble, wipe down your walls with a 70% Water, 30% Vinegar mix. This will not take off your paint.
Q. Are there any other helpful hints for applying my Tatouage?
A. The main thing to remember before applying your artwork is to make sure the surface is CLEAN and DRY.
If you are applying it to semi-gloss surfaces you may need to lightly sand the area, or do a 70% water, 30% vinegar mix and wash down the wall to give it something to adhere to. You may also scrub the wall with a Scotch-Brite Pad. OR... you may spray the wall lightly with Krylon Clear Finish. If your walls are glossy, then apply a glossy finish spray. This almost always works. You may spray three or four light coats over wall. Make sure each coat dries completely before appylying your Tatouage designs.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you have painted your walls with a paint that contains Teflon, our Tatouage Designs will probably not stick regardless of what you do. Teflon is found in paints commonly advertised as ideal of children's rooms. Paint that contains Teflon makes it easier to remove stains, crayon and other marks from walls.
Always READ the directions thoroughly before applying Tatouage. Keep the backing on until you are ready to place it down. Take your time.
Q. Can I add paint to my Tatouage Designs?
Absolutely! Some of our designs are large murals or trees which go up piece by piece before they are completed. On a few of these designs there may be a small seam that is slightly visible. You may leave them untouched and chances are, you will never notice them. But if you would like to add paint, you may do so. Or if you have some artistic talent yourself, you may even add to our designs.
NEW INFORMATION: I personally bought the Bella Donna statue which is available in a gray wash color. I wanted to change the tone of the Bella Donna, so I applied artist acrylic paint over the design and found that it worked well. If you would like more information regarding this process, please call or EMAIL US.
